Applications:

In order to improve the rust resistance of steel parts, a strong oxidising agent is used to oxidise the surface of the steel parts into a dense, smooth layer of iron tetraoxide. This thin layer of iron tetraoxide effectively protects the interior of the steel part from oxidation. At high temperature (about 550℃) the oxidised iron tetraoxide is sky blue, so it is called bluing treatment. In the low temperature (about 350 ℃) formed by the formation of iron tetraoxide is dark black, so called blackening treatment. In the manufacture of weapons, commonly used is the blue treatment; in industrial production, commonly used is the blackening treatment.

Strong oxidising agent is composed of sodium hydroxide, sodium nitrite, trisodium phosphate. When bluing, their molten solution is used to treat the steel; when blackening, their aqueous solution is used to treat the steel.
