Hex bolts are widely used across various industries due to their simple design, high strength, and ease of installation.
Standard hexagon head bolts are reusable, whereas high-strength bolts are not.
High-strength bolts are typically manufactured from high-strength steel grades such as 45 steel (8.8S) or 20MmTiB (10.9S). They function as prestressed bolts: friction-type bolts require a torque wrench to apply specified prestress, while tension-type bolts have their hex heads removed. Ordinary bolts are usually manufactured from mild steel (Q235) and require only tightening.
Ordinary bolts are typically graded 4.4, 4.8, 5.6, and 8.8. High-strength bolts are generally graded 8.8 or 10.9, with 10.9 being the predominant grade.
The threaded hole for an ordinary bolt is not necessarily larger than that for a high-strength bolt. In practice, standard bolt holes are relatively smaller.
For standard bolts of grades A and B, the hole diameter is typically only 0.3–0.5mm larger than the bolt. For grade C, the hole diameter is generally 1.0–1.5mm larger than the bolt.
Friction-type high-strength bolts rely on friction to transmit loads, allowing a difference of 1.5–2.0mm between the bolt shank and hole diameter.
